New York to Sydney Business Class: JFK One-Stop Options

No nonstop yet, so the choice is where you stop

No airline flies New York to Sydney nonstop. In August 2022, Auckland Airport announced that Qantas would fly between Sydney and New York JFK with a stop in Auckland from 14 June 2023, on Boeing 787 Dreamliners. We could not confirm the current schedule or aircraft of that routing on a Qantas page.

Qantas says on its First page that nonstop flights to New York will soon be possible with its Airbus A350, but its Project Sunrise page, updated 12 October 2026, gives no launch date for New York. In a May 2025 release, American and Qantas named New York JFK as one of the North American gateways connecting into their joint network, and said Qantas would fly all Dallas Fort Worth to Sydney flights on the Airbus A380 from January 2026.

What our search returned for New York to Sydney

Our own business class fare search, run on 20 October 2026 for 4 December 2026 departures, listed only one-stop itineraries, all sold by American Airlines, from 22 hours 29 minutes up to 32 hours. It listed no Qantas itinerary for that date. American's Sydney page also lists fares from Dallas Fort Worth and Los Angeles.

Business, Premium Economy and First on the way to Sydney

On its 787, Qantas sells Business as a fully flat bed 80 inches long in a 1-2-1 layout, and Premium Economy in a 2-3-2 layout with 38 inches of pitch. Qantas lists First on its A380 only, on routes to Singapore, Johannesburg, London and Los Angeles. Auckland Airport's 2022 announcement put the Auckland routing on the 787, which Qantas does not fit with First.

American's May 2025 release describes its new 787-9 with 51 Flagship Suite seats and 32 Premium Economy seats. We could not confirm which aircraft our American itineraries use, so an advisor checks each leg before you pay.

JFK Terminal 8 lounges and arriving in Sydney

Qantas and American both use JFK Terminal 8. Qantas lists two Terminal 8 partner lounges: the Greenwich lounge on the Concourse B mezzanine above gate 12 and the Soho First lounge above gate 14. It also lists an Admirals Club in New York. We could not confirm which of these a Qantas Business passenger may use, so check when you book.

International flights use Sydney Terminal 1, where Qantas has a Business lounge on Level 2 near gate 24 and a First lounge for the trip home. The Australian Embassy in Washington says all ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an Australian ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) in the official Australian ETA app, with no visa charge but an AUD20 service fee, and warns that applying through a website is a sign of a scam.
